Little White Light

Have you ever been terrified of a little white light? Well I am right now. No horror movie, no episode of Supernatural, no campfire story, and no things going bump in the night, have scared me more than the screen of my cell phone lighting up with a notification that I have a new text message.

Over the last eight months I have become really close friends with a guy from work. We text all the time, working with him is always really fun (we joke around, tease each other, and get in water fights with the spray bottles and the dish washing sprayer thingy), we have even gone to a dance (JUST AS FRIENDS) together. He works all the time, so the only time we get to hang out is in the store. It is a rare day that we don't text each other, even when I'm gone on vacation.

About a month ago, I started to realize that I was really starting to like this guy, but I wasn't going to tell him. That's just not my style. I'm more the kind of girl who stays quiet and just wishes on stars and dandelion fluff, and throws pennies in wishing wells.

This last week was our annual County Fair. Living in rural Utah this is kind of a big deal. My personal favorite part of the Fair is the PRCA Rodeo that takes place the last two nights. The Friday before the rodeo was to begin I asked my friend if he wanted to go with me. Unfortunately, he worked both nights. I wasn't too bummed out, however. I had kind of figured that would happen. Like I said, he works a lot. The weekend rolled around like it typically did: we texted all of the time and goofed off at work. Then Tuesday, I was hanging out with him and his friend at the store while they worked, and I hid from the rain. I happened to mention that I was really excited for the rodeo. He kind of perked up a little and went over and looked at the schedule. Then he smiled and said something along the lines of "I'll try and find someone to trade me shifts on Friday so we can go." On the outside I played cool and collected, like: "oh that's cool. It will be fun." But in my head it was more like this: "ohmygosh!! He said he would try and find someone to cover for him!!!!!" The next day, I texted him to see if he had found anyone who would be willing to trade him shifts. Considering there were only two people, besides myself, who were not working that night. I doubted he would be able to. My thoughts were confirmed. He hadn't found anyone yet. The next day (the day before the rodeo) I asked again. Once again he said he hadn't been able to find anyone. I jokingly asked if he wanted me to talk to some people. He said to go for it, so I did. I didn't have any luck either. I texted him with the news and he seemed completely bewildered and confused as to why I was trying to find people to cover his shift. That made me a little angry and hurt that he had completely forgotten our entire conversation from just minutes earlier. I said some things that I maybe shouldn't have said, realized I had been incredibly rude, and apologized. Though, if you asked me now, I can't even remember what I had said.

The next day, I texted him to tell him I could cover for him while he registered for school the upcoming week. No reply. This confused me a little. Maybe he had found someone to trade his shifts?! So I waited until three, when the morning shift usually ends, thinking he would text me when he got off work. Nothing. I waited until five, then seven. Still nothing. By this point I had talked to some of my girlfriends and had decided to go to the rodeo with them instead. On my way to the rodeo, I stopped in the store to check my schedule. Guess who was there. Yep. There he was, washing dishes like nothing else mattered. He didn't say two words to me the whole time I was back there. Granted, it was only about thirty seconds, but still it was weird.  Something was definitely wrong between us, it was obvious.

That night, my friends and I decided that maybe he figured that I had been trying to ask him out and had freaked out and was now not speaking to me in hopes of effectively friend-zoning me. (Note: I never had any plans of moving out of the friend-zone without him making the first move. The rodeo was supposed to be just for fun.) The next day passed without a single text, and I was becoming more and more paranoid. I was supposed to be closing the store with him that night. That meant at least three hours of no other workers but us in the store. If we weren't talking, that would make for a painfully long and awkward night.

When I arrived at the store for my shift the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with one of our sandwich knives. He wouldn't speak to me, or hardly even look at me for that matter, unless I directly addressed him. Then he would say one or two words and walk off. He would laugh and talk with the other worker, but when I came around he would shut right up. It was horrible. Then to my suprise, when seven o'clock rolled around, he made a pizza and clocked out. He had traded shifts with the other worker! He said it was so he could go to the rodeo, but I feel like it was so he wouldn't have to be around me.

Today I tried to text him again to ask what was wrong and apologize once again for being so rude. The only reply was: I don't feel like talking right now. To say the least. I gave him his space and didn't reply. Then, out of the blue a couple of hours later I get a text from him saying he's sorry for leaving, it wasn't my fault and that he had a question for me.

I began to hardcore panic. He has a question for me? What kind of question? Crap. He is probably going to ask if I like him or not. What do I say if he does? I can't tell him I like him. Then I will really scare him off if I haven't already. I know! I will just play dumb and act like I don't know what he is talking about. Yes, perfect plan, I will play the dumb blonde card. But, Aften, you aren't really blonde. Shut up self! I was born blonde and my hair darkened. Technically that counts as being blonde.

Ten minutes after I tell him to ask away, I get a response that says: no, never mind.

What!?! That was it? "No, never mind" That is what I was so afraid of??

My response conveyed my confusion. And he responded with: "sorry, bye"

I haven't attempted in a response so our conversation (if you can even call it that) has long since died.

Now, every time my phone lights up with a new message my heart stops for a moment in pure terror that this time it will be my friend, asking his terrifying question.

Burning Bridges

What do you do when you feel like everyone you thought you could trust isn't there anymore?

I could literally go out and sit on the haystack in my back yard right down and watch as my life fell apart at the seams. I could watch as relationships I have worked at keeping for my entire life are reduced to nothing more than ash and smoke. I could watch as everything I have worked for crumbles to dust, and I wouldn't be able to do a single thing about it.

Recently I have slipped into a depression. It started I think...well I'm not really sure when it started, all I know is my self esteem is at about 2%, I can't stand the thought of myself in general, and I seem to have lost the ability to feel.

When I say I have lost the ability to feel, I mean most of the time. Occasionally, I can get angry, hurt, or sad, and when that happens, it's like that emotion is magnified 100%. I don't just get a little hurt my friends didn't call me to hang out, I get so hurt, I can't even talk. Then I get angry at them for not inviting me. After I get angry, I slip into a phase of self loathing so deep that nothing even matters anymore. This only happens on the occasion, though.

Even rarer, however, is the emotion of happiness. It is so rare that I am truly happy anymore, I can only think of a single time recently. My Junior Prom. Yes, I know it sounds cheesy, but that was the first time in months I genuinely laughed, and smiled, and was a normal teenager. That was in March, and I haven't felt that same joy since.

Being unable to feel has caused some major problems in the relationships I have. It has especially damaged my relationship with the people I once considered my closest friends.

Ever since High School started, I have felt them slowly slipping away from me, but this past year has been especially bad. It has gotten to the point where they don't invite me to go places with them or hang out after school with them. More and more they ignore me at school and church too. They talk about all the fun times they have had, and all of their exciting plans they are making while I sit right there, unnoticed. When I ask about them hanging out without me, they lie and make up things to justify why I wasn't invited. "We didn't even think about it." or "We thought you were busy." I don't even know what to do anymore.

I know what I need to do is turn to the Lord and He will show me the way. My only problem is, even though I have been raised with Christ in my life, I have begun to doubt what I have been taught my whole life. I no longer feel the comfort of the Holy Ghost anymore. My testimony of the Gospel has crumbled under the stress and numbness of my life.

I don't know what to do.

Sorry this post was so depressing. Hopefully next time it will be happier.

To try and make up for all the sadness... Here are some pictures from my Prom!!

All About...Me?

I was born on July 21, 1997. As my family's first child I became the center of their world. From the very start I was a daddy's girl and I still am today. I doubt it is something that will ever change. I love doing anything with my dad, even if it is just going to pick up some hay for our horses.

When I was three years old, my first brother was born. I remember being so excited to finally have someone to play with at home. Imagine my disappointment when I found out that all Craig did was sleep, eat, barf, and drool.... Yeah, I wasn't the happiest person around and I sure didn't like not having all the attention to myself. When he got older, however, I began to enjoy having someone to dress up in my old dresses and play dolls and horses with.

I got my very first pair of cowboy boots when I was four, and I wore them constantly. I would pull them on and ride my white stick horse around the house like a wild child. I would pull pillows off the couch and set them up in the barrel racing pattern and run around them for hours. It was by far my favorite pass time. I would put a plastic tiara on my cowboy hat and run around waving like a rodeo queen. When anyone would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would smile as bright as I could and say, "I wanna be a Rodeo Queen or a cowgirl." My mom just laughed and told them that would never happen...she should have watched her words a little closer.

When I was six my second, and last, brother was born. I remember crying when I found out my mom was having another boy. All I wanted out of life was a sister...  Before he was born my parents would talk about names. I remember hanging upside off the couch and saying, "Why do you argue about names? Just name him Alex." I was promptly told that the couch was not a jungle gym and to get off and behave. Well, later while in the hospital they still couldn't think of a name so they decided to just call him Alex. So that is how I got to name my youngest sibling.

Around this same time my dad bought us two new horses. I fell in love with them instantly. There was a big white and grey mare named Dee Dee and a sorrel gelding named Clyde. We still have them today.

I also started dancing when I was in 1st grade. My mom took me to a studio called Morgan Academy  of Dance and Tumbling so I could learn ballet. I danced for five years there and I still think that was some of the best times I ever had.

Elementary and Middle School passed fairly uneventfully and if anything really happened I don't really remember it. All I remember was hanging out constantly with my two best friends: Cheyenne and Arielle.

Remember how my mother said I would never be a Rodeo Queen? Well when I was 11 I tried out in my first contest. Honestly, I didn't do very well, but I made it into the court as Miss Congeniality. For the next four years I tried out and moved up a rank every year. The summer I turned 15 I was finally able to wear the Queen banner and crown, and fulfill my childhood dream.

My Freshman year of High School started, and everyone kept telling me to join FFA. Eventually I gave in and did and it has been the best decision of my life. I was able to compete in Creed Speaking on a State level, even though I didn't think I was able to speak in front of people. I also was able to start horse judging. It was the time of my life.

I am still involved in FFA and am enjoying every minute of it. I am competing in Prepared Public Speaking on an National level in the Fall. I am nervously awaiting the contest. I still love riding horses and miss dancing just about everyday.
